Vision from all, Voice for All

APB’s Senior Class leads the Democracy Lab efforts through their work in the classroom, educating parents and families about the inner workings of our democracy, and participation in civic action. We use the Avenues to Action model, allowing all students—regardless of age or citizenship status to be active participants in the democratic process, and to create pathways for future and sustained engagement.

Joel Snyder, Democracy Lab Coach

Mr. Snyder has been teaching Government and Civics since 2003 and at Animo Pat Brown Charter High School since 2009, when APB graduated its first senior class. In 2022, he was honored by the Supreme Court of California’s Chief Justice as the California Champion of Civics.

He has participated in fellowships and training through the New York Times, Citizen University, the American Bar Association, SXSWedu, the Gilder-Lehrman Institute of American History and National Endowment for the Humanities.

Joel is a graduate of the University of Michigan.
